Gate Valve
A gate valve is the most common valve for water supply systems. It represents a linear-motion isolation valve and has a function to stop or allow the flow. Gate valves got their name from the closure element sliding into the flow stream to provide shutoff and, therefore, acting like a gate. Gate valves are used to isolate specific areas of the water supply network during maintenance, repair works, new installations, as well as to reroute water flow throughout the pipeline.

Main Features
Gate-like Component
A gate valve uses a gate-like component to control flow. The gate is typically a flat disc or a wedge that slides up and down perpendicular to the flow.
Operation
Manually operated gate valves are controlled by turning a handle or wheel, which moves the gate up or down via a threaded stem. Typically, when the gate is lifted, it allows fluid to pass through. When the gate is lowered, it blocks the flow.
Use Cases
Gate valves are typically used in applications where a straight-line flow of fluid with minimal restriction is desired. They are used in on/off applications where the valve is either completely open or completely closed.
Not for Throttling
These valves are not suitable for throttling (regulating flow by partially opening or closing) because accelerated flow through a partially open gate can cause damage to the gate and sealing components.
Leakage and Wear
When fully opened, the gate is completely removed from the flow path, creating minimal pressure drop across the valve.
Design Variants
Gate valves come in various designs. In non-rising stem designs, the gate travels up and down the stem as the stem is rotated. In rising stem valves, the gate and stem move together as the stem is rotated.
Connection size
The connection size needs to match the size of the piping it connects to.
Max pressure at 20 °C/68 °F
Exceeding the valve's max operating pressure can damage it and reduce its lifetime.
Compression class
Compression class (e.g., PN10 or PN20) indicates the max pressure (bar) the valve can handle under normal operation.
Hand wheel height (mm)
The hand wheel sticks out above the body of the gate valve. Know how this affects the valve's total height when in the closed and open positions.
Valve bore (mm)
The internal diameter of the valve.

Difference Between Gate Valve vs Check Valve
Gate valves and check valves serve different purposes in fluid control systems. While gate valves are primarily used for starting and stopping the flow, check valves serve to prevent backflow. The following sections highlight some of these differences.
Operational Differences
|
Gate Valves |
Check Valves |
|
Operates either manually or automatically to fully allow or completely shut out flow. Could permit bi-directional flow but not suitable for metering flow. |
Design is for automatic operation for flow in only one direction. |
Applications
|
Gate Valves |
Check Valves |
|
Suitable for applications requiring no obstruction on the flow path. For example, water distribution systems, oil pipelines, and chemical processing plants. |
Ideal for systems where backflow could damage or reduce efficiency. Instances include pump systems, condensate lines, and fuel systems. |
Pressure Drop

Installation Space
|
Gate Valves |
Check Valves |

Generally requires a lot more installation space. However, non-rising stem gate valves offer a relatively compact design. |
Can easily fit into tight spaces because of their compact design. |
Applications of Gate Valves
Gate valves are versatile and are used in a wide range of applications across various industries. Some common applications include:
Water Supply Systems
Gate valves are commonly used in water supply systems to control the flow of water. They are ideal for applications where a full open or close position is needed, such as in municipal water mains, distribution systems, and irrigation systems.
Oil and Gas Industry
In the downhole drilling and oil and gas industry, gate valves are used to control the flow of crude oil, natural gas, and other hydrocarbons in pipelines. Their ability to handle high pressure and provide a reliable seal makes them a preferred choice in these applications.
Chemical Processing
Gate valves are used in chemical processing plants to manage the flow of various chemicals, including corrosive and hazardous substances. The choice of valve material is crucial in these applications to ensure compatibility with the chemicals being handled.
Power Generation
In power plants, gate valves are employed in steam and water pipelines to control the flow of steam and cooling water. They are particularly useful in high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
Wastewater Treatment
Gate valves are also used in wastewater treatment plants to manage the flow of sewage and treated water. Their ability to handle large volumes of fluid makes them suitable for these applications.
What Types Of Gate Valves Are There
There are various types of gate valves available to industries working in the control of fluid flow. They are:
