High Pressure Gate Valve

High pressure gate valve is an industrial isolation valve engineered to shut off flow in high-pressure piping systems. The gate moves vertically relative to the flow path and operates in the fully open or fully closed position.

When fully open, the gate is removed from the flow passage, delivering minimal pressure drop and low flow resistance. This valve is designed strictly for isolation service and is not recommended for continuous throttling.

Valve Design and Construction

Gate and Seat

In the fully open position, the gate is completely clear of the flow path. In the closed position, the gate and seat form the primary seal. For high-pressure, high-temperature, or erosive media, Stellite hard-faced metal seating is applied to enhance wear and erosion resistance.

Rising Stem (OS&Y)

The stem threads are positioned outside the valve body, preventing contact with process fluids and line contaminants. The rising stem provides direct visual confirmation of the valve position, though it requires vertical clearance for operation.

Non-Rising Stem

The stem stays inside the valve body, maintaining a constant overall height during operation. This compact footprint is ideal for underground installations, offshore platforms, or space-constrained areas.

FAQ

Q: What design standards govern High Pressure Gate Valves?

A: High pressure gate valves are manufactured according to API 600 (bolted bonnet steel gate valves), API 6D (pipeline valves), and ASME B16.34 (valves - flanged, threaded, and welding end). Pressure testing is performed per API 598 or ISO 5208.

Q: Can a High Pressure Gate Valve be used for flow regulation or throttling?

A: No. Gate valves are designed exclusively for fully open or fully closed isolation. Operating a gate valve in a partially open position causes severe vibration, seat erosion, and cavitation, leading to premature valve failure.

Q: When should I choose a Pressure Seal Bonnet over a Bolted Bonnet?

A: Pressure Seal Bonnets are recommended for high-pressure and high-temperature applications (typically Class 900 / PN150 and above). Unlike bolted bonnets, internal system pressure pushes the seal gasket tighter against the body, improving the seal integrity as pressure increases.

Q: What is the difference between RF and RTJ flange connections in high-pressure service?

A: Raised Face (RF) flanges are widely used in lower to medium pressure classes. For Class 600 and higher applications, Ring Type Joint (RTJ) flanges are preferred because they utilize a solid metal ring gasket to deliver a reliable seal under extreme pressures and thermal cycling.

Q: Do you offer NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliant valves for sour service?

A: Yes. For oil and gas applications containing hydrogen sulfide (H2S), body, stem, and trim materials can be processed and tested to comply with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 to prevent sulfide stress cracking.
